Ortom defeats Zam, Utaan in Online Poll, voters give reasons

The Benue Northwest Senatorial candidate of the People’s Democratic Party, Chief (Mrs) Eunice Ortom, PhD has defeated his opponents from the All Progressive Congress, APC and National Democratic Congress, NDC, Senator Titus Zam and Engineer Conrad Utaan in an online poll conducted by Nigerian Concord Group last week.

At the poll which was conducted on many social media platforms, Chief Eunice Ortom, the People’s Democratic Party candidate got One thousand and nine hundred and eight four (1,984) votes while his closest rival, Senator Titus Zam, PhD got Four hundred and six votes (406) and Engineer Utaan of the National Democratic Congress got One hundred and thirty five votes (135)

During the collation of results by members of the newspaper’s Electoral Panel, a total number of One hundred and fifty votes (150) were voided as a result of multiple voting.

Some participants who commented while voting stated that Senator Titus Zam has failed woefully in the last three years so he doesn’t deserve a second term in office.

Some of them said that there is no meaningful federal presence in Benue Northwest since the senator assumed duties in June, 2023. Some stressed that his only achievement was following the Senate President, Godswil Akpabio from one country to the other.

The expressed sadness over Zam’s failure to use his closeness to the Senate President to bring development to the senatorial zone. They also accused him of syphoning the huge billions of Naira he has got for Constituency projects.

Some participants complained bitterly about Utaan’s failure to use his position as a Focal Person for the National Social Investment Programme judiciously. They said that his only achievement was enriching himself with funds meant for the people of the State who were under the investment scheme.

According to some participants, Utaan cannot make a credible representative at the Red Chambers of the National Assembly as a result of his poor past records as a public functionary.

For Mrs Ortom, several participants highlighted her achievements as a first lady and how she was able to bring Benue women and youths together irrespective of political party affiliation.

They spoke about how she used her Eunice Springs Life Foundation to assist the people of Benue while she was the first lady of the State.
