As President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s reforms are aimed on positive step forward, Human Rights Activist and Pro-Chancellor Human Rights Activist and Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council for Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko in Ondo State, Dr Tunji Abayomi has cautioned Leaders and Ministers of government not to plunge citizens further into poverty rather make the reforms work for Nigerians.
Abayomi in an open letter dated 1st September, 2023 titled: “Open Letter to the Leaders and Ministers of the Republic” a copy given to newsmen in Akure, the Ondo state capital noted that politics have been used to transform other lands, make it work for Nigeria and make a difference during the time of Bola Tinubu.
He further urged them not to be afraid to stand right but they should stand firm against any interest howsoever on any issue saying that nations are built by courageous, persevering Leaders not coward or self prossessed or preoccupied Leaders.
According to him, “As a worker from the beginning in the enterprise for a better Nigeria Nation, I will continue to wish you well but solely on the condition of support when the government does well and condemned when it errs.
The Constitutional lawyer said the organic strength of any nation rests on just two pivots, the first is the people from which everything emerges, the second is the leadership on which every hope depends.
“The present government to which you are now a Minister or leader must at this point face the two sectors with sober challenge, that is, if the government wants to succeed.
“Now depending on the Leaders of government, Nigeria has a new chance for her evolution with change matra in the air. This is what I believe President Bola Ahmed Tinubu described as renewed hope but what I really prefer to call a new hope.
“What Nigeria urgently need now, is a bold new age of leadership responsibility and serious growth inspired by the painful sacrifices of the people. Work hard, work hastily, honest and determinedly with the President whose wife already assured us that they have enough to live on and will not misuse public money” Abayomi stressed
He also cautioned them to lift themselves above common wrongs of taking the money they know they are not entitled to take saying that they should avoid misuse and abuses of public office and that they should work to build a great nation and be deliberate think high.
“The people of Nigeria are getting not just tired out, but very weary and exhausted by leadership failures in this land. So, turn your eyes and you heart away from the peoples’ money and face the serious business of diligent and honest service.
“Avoid stealing public money, avoid corruption that have typified public life in Nigeria. Be different, be unique, after all everything belongs to the world.
“If today you ask Nigerians their views about this nation, they will tell you that this nation was set back by her past government and Leaders who blighted the great chances it had to fly like Eagle.
The lack of faith in government and nation arose from the embarrassing failures and betrayals of rhe past, which themselves flowed from uncontrolled corrupt appetite of Leaders of government. Today the people of Nigeria are confronted with a resolution of rising frustration, weakened faith and shattered expectations. How can a nation be blessed with human and material endowment be so low rated in the index of human and material development”, he said.
