From the serene surroundings of Judges Quarters to the ever-busy High Level axis, the streets erupted in jubilation as hundreds of supporters flooded the roads on Tuesday,
May 5, 2026 to accompany Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Chief Michael Kaase Aondoakaa to the Benue State Secretariat of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) where he picked his 2027 nomination and expression of interest forms.
It was not just another political outing. It was a movement in appearance, style and sound.
Okada riders came down from their motorcycles and marched slowly ahead of the motorcade in a rare public display of solidarity. Bus drivers blared their horns in excitement. Pedestrians lined the roads chanting and waving. Traders left their shops to catch a glimpse of the man many now believe could define Benue’s political future.
The atmosphere was electric.
For over two hours, Makurdi witnessed what many observers described as one of the most spontaneous public political mobilisations seen in recent times. It was a loud and unmistakable signal that the Aondoakaa 2027 Project is rapidly gaining emotional connection with ordinary people across Benue State.
Chief Aondoakaa has attended many other events since then, and anywhere he goes, crowds come out to greet him, cheering and asking him to come and lead them.
In every generation, a people are confronted with a defining question: Who possesses the character, courage, competence and capacity to lead them into a better future?
As the race for the 2027 governorship election gradually gathers momentum in Benue State, the name Michael Kaase Aondoakaa has continued to resonate across political, professional and grassroots circles with uncommon intensity.
To many, he is not just another politician seeking power. He is a statesman forged by destiny, sharpened by experience, tested by service and prepared for leadership.
Today, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Benue State has found in Chief Aondoakaa, a consensus candidate whose credentials, influence and capacity tower above partisan sentiments.
A CHILD OF DESTINY
The story of Aondoakaa is not an ordinary political story. It is the story of providence.
Born on June 12, 1962 into the royal family of His Royal Highness, Late Chief Abraham Aondoakaa Ugbudu Pahar of Mbashabu, Mbakuha Ukan in Ushongo Local Government Area of Benue State, destiny seemed to chart his path long before he understood it himself.
As a young boy, all he wanted was a belt.
That simple search for a leather belt would unexpectedly alter the course of his life forever. Unable to find one in Gboko, he travelled to Makurdi where fate led him to Mount Saint Gabriel’s Secondary School – one of the most prestigious institutions in Northern Nigeria at the time.
That singular moment became the foundation upon which one of Nigeria’s most accomplished legal minds would rise.
Years later, another twist of destiny awaited him at the University of Maiduguri. He had gone there intending to study Political Science. But a university staff member named Sule advised him to switch to Law instead.
He obeyed.
That decision would eventually produce a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Attorney-General of the Federation, global legal figure and one of Benue’s most distinguished sons.
FROM THE COURTROOM TO THE NATIONAL STAGE
Aondoakaa’s rise in the legal profession was not accidental.
After obtaining his LL.B from the University of Maiduguri and proceeding to the Nigerian Law School in Lagos where he earned his B.L and was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1986, he built an intimidating legal career marked by brilliance, discipline and strategic depth.
For nearly two decades, he dominated legal practice as a senior partner, handling complex civil, criminal and commercial cases with uncommon mastery.
In 2006, Aondoakaa attained the prestigious rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), the highest professional distinction for legal practitioners in the country.
Then came national service.
In 2007, former President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua appointed him Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice – one of the most sensitive and powerful offices in Nigeria.
Interestingly, Aondoakaa did not lobby for the position.
According to his own account, he had actually been assisting friends to secure ministerial appointments when he unexpectedly received an invitation from President Yar’Adua himself.
The President asked him a direct question:
“Can you be my Attorney-General?”
That was the beginning of a remarkable era in Nigeria’s legal and governance history.
A MAN WITH REAL GOVERNANCE EXPERIENCE
Benue does not merely need a politician in 2027.
Benue needs a leader who understands governance from the inside.
This is where Aondoakaa stands far ahead of many contenders.
As Attorney-General and later Minister for Special Duties under former Presidents Yar’Adua and Goodluck Jonathan, he participated directly in national policy formulation, constitutional reforms, international diplomacy, justice sector reforms and strategic governance.
He chaired and served on several high-level national committees, including:
~ Chairman, Land Use Reform Committee
~ Chairman, Federal Executive Committee on Review of the 1999 Constitution
~ Head of Delegation on the Nigeria-Cameroon Mixed Commission on Bakassi
~ Member, National Council on Privatization
~ Member, Committee on Modernisation of Nigerian Railways
~ Member, Nigerian Nuclear Regulatory Authority Technical Committee.
These are not ceremonial positions. They are responsibilities reserved for individuals with intellect, integrity and administrative competence.
A GLOBAL STATESMAN WITH INTERNATIONAL CONNECTIONS
Leadership today requires global exposure.
A governor must be able to attract investment, negotiate partnerships and position his state competitively in a rapidly changing world.
Aondoakaa possesses that rare advantage.
In 2009, he became the first African elected into the Governing Council of UNIDROIT in Rome, Italy – a globally respected institution dedicated to harmonising international private law.
He has represented Nigeria and Africa at major international conferences in the United States, United Kingdom, Qatar, Indonesia, Kenya, Italy, Scotland, Dubai and several other countries across Europe, Africa and Asia.
His international network and diplomatic exposure place him in a strong position to attract development opportunities to Benue State.
NOT JUST A LAWYER – A BUILDER OF INDUSTRIES
Perhaps one of Aondoakaa’s most remarkable qualities is his transition from public office to productive enterprise.
Unlike many former public office holders who disappear after government service, he returned home and invested massively in agriculture.
Today, his company remains one of Nigeria’s biggest local producers and processors of rice through MIVA Rice.
At a time Nigeria is pushing for food security and industrialisation, Aondoakaa has already demonstrated practical knowledge in agriculture, agro-processing, job creation and investment.
He is not merely speaking about economic diversification.
He is living it.
As President of the West African Rice Processors Association and Chairman of Mikap Nigeria Limited, he has contributed immensely to agricultural transformation and local production.
This is the kind of practical economic leadership Benue urgently requires.
