In 1997, deep in Achia village, Ikyurav ya , Kwande Local Government Area, a tragedy occurred that shook an entire community. A woman lay dead from burns. Another woman , a wife and mother stood accused.
The society had already reached its verdict long before the courts concluded theirs. The accused name was Mrs Mbanengen Shande. The allegation was horrifying. The prosecution claimed she set ablaze her husband’s lover, Mrumun Dera, after the deceased was brought into her matrimonial home to sleep for the night.
It was the kind of story that naturally provokes anger and emotional judgment.The trial court convicted Mbanengen Shande and sentenced her to death. The Court of Appeal affirmed the conviction. To many, the case was finished. The woman was already walking toward her death without any help .
But one lawyer looked beyond the headlines.One lawyer asked difficult questions. One lawyer believed justice must never be built on emotion, assumption or public outrage.That lawyer was Chief Michael Kaase Aondoakaa, SAN.
At a time when many would avoid a condemned woman whose fate appeared sealed, Aondoakaa took the matter to the Supreme Court of Nigeria pro bono, that is free of charge .He fought on the basis of law, evidence and humanity. He questioned whether the prosecution truly proved its case beyond reasonable doubt. He challenged inconsistencies, confronted weaknesses in the evidence. He insisted that even the most hated citizen deserves fair hearing and proper justice.
MKA’s humane efforts brought a turning point. The Supreme Court of Nigeria allowed the appeal.Mbanengen Shande once condemned to die was discharged and acquitted. That judgment became one of Nigeria’s notable authorities on criminal justice, proof beyond reasonable doubt and the danger of emotional convictions.
But beyond legal history lies a deeper question for Benue people today which is What type of leader fights for people when the entire society has abandoned them? Because leadership is not tested when things are convenient. Leadership is tested when standing with somebody carries risk.
Today , the same Chief Mike Kaase Aondoakaa is seeking to lead Benue State as PDP gubernatorial candidate for 2027. So this story explains something fundamental about him which is before politics, there was compassion. Before campaigns, there was courage. Before power, there was service. This woman was not a rich or influential woman.
This was not a politically connected family. This was a condemned villager from rural Benue staring at death. Yet somebody fought for her life until justice spoke. In a season where politics has become dominated by insults, propaganda and bitterness, the story of Mbanengen Shande reminds Benue people that leadership can still carry a human face.
A society survives not merely because of strong politicians, but because of men and women willing to defend fairness even when it is unpopular. That is the human angle behind Chief Mike Kaase Aondoakaa.And perhaps that is the kind of empathy Benue desperately needs again.
