A former Minister for Justice and Attorney General of the Federation, Chief Michael Kaase Aondoakaa, SAN today condemned the reign of political thuggery in Benue state as the country prepares for the 2027 general elections.
Chief Aondoakaa made this condemnation today when he paid a visit to the leader of the Strategic Partnership between the People’s Democratic Party and the All Progressive Congress in Benue state, Chief Samuel Ortom, PhD who was at the time hosting an Expanded Caucus Meeting of the party at his residence in Makurdi.
In his speech, the former Chief Law Officer called on political actors in Benue State to embrace peaceful politics rooted in brotherhood, unity and mutual respect
The former minister also frowned at what he described as the return of political thuggery in the state, noting with concern recent incidents where church services and public occasions were disrupted and individuals harassed simply because they were perceived to hold political views different from those of the government of the day.
He described such actions as unacceptable and dangerous to the peace and democratic culture of the state, stressing that Benue people are known for tolerance and respect for one another regardless of political differences.
Speaking during the visit, Aondoakaa stressed that politics should serve as a platform for development, peace and the collective progress of society rather than a tool for bitterness and division. He lamented that the growing culture of hostile and confrontational politics being promoted by some political actors in the state does not reflect the true purpose of political engagement.
Aondoakaa particularly commended the cordial and strategic relationship between the leader of the All Progressives Congress in Benue State, Sen.Dr. George Akume, and the leader of the PDP, Chief Ortom. He described their relationship as a shining example of politics anchored on respect, maturity and love for the state despite belonging to different political parties.
He noted that such cooperation across party lines demonstrates that political competition does not have to destroy personal relationships or the collective commitment to the peace and development of Benue State. He therefore urged politicians across the state to emulate this example by promoting tolerance, dialogue and peaceful engagement, stressing that the future of Benue depends largely on the ability of its leaders to work together in the spirit of brotherhood.
