Ukum massacres: Benue govt issues 24 hours curfew as killings, destruction of properties continues

Benue State Governor, Rev Fr Hyacinth Alia, has issued a 24-hour curfew in Ukum Local Government Area (LGA), of Benue State, following the destruction of government property and torching of the LG secretariat on Wednesday, morning.

The Governor said that in the first instance, the curfew would last for 24 hours, that is from 3 pm on Wednesday to 3 pm on Thursday.

Rising from an emergency Security Council meeting at Government House, Makurdi, on Wednesday, the Governor who was represented by his Deputy, Barr Sam Ode, said that thereafter the curfew would continue from 6 pm to 6 am (dusk to dawn) as from Thursday, 4th July, till further notice.

Meanwhile, bandits have killed about 8 persons in Ukum LGA of the state, a development which led to violent protests by irate youth. The youth were protesting the killing of eight persons in Ayati, Borikyo council ward of Ukum LGA, in the early hours of Wednesday.
