Dr. Terungwa Stephen Hwande, Chief Medical Director of Benue State University Teaching Hospital, celebrated his 50th birthday on Monday, 29th September, 2025, dedicating the occasion to the less privileged. The event, held at IBB Square Makurdi, drew family, friends, government officials, and the public in large numbers.
Earlier, Dr. Hwande visited the Yaikyo Correctional Centre where he presented gift items to inmates. The gesture reflected his empathy and long-standing commitment to touching lives across different spectrums. He emphasized that celebrating with the less privileged was a deliberate choice to bring succour and offer hope.
In his remarks, Dr. Hwande said he decided to share the day with people living with disabilities, stressing that society must reassure them that “there is always someone who feels their plight.” His words mirrored his philosophy of philanthropy and inclusive leadership.
Speaking for Zone B elders, Hon. Richard Asema praised Dr. Hwande’s impact, describing him as a man deeply connected to his community. Asema urged the people to rally behind Hwande’s senatorial ambition, noting his love for the poor and contributions to social and community development.
The Governor’s Spiritual Director, Father Ugoh, also spoke at the event. He admonished Dr. Hwande to remain steadfast, saying he had proven capable of greater responsibilities. Father Ugoh affirmed that Hwande had not disappointed the people entrusted to him, and could be trusted with bigger leadership roles.
Beneficiaries of Dr. Hwande’s benevolence expressed gratitude, offering prayers for his success. They testified to the life-changing impact of his interventions and encouraged him to continue extending his goodwill. Their testimonies reflected the far-reaching effects of his generosity and compassion.
The highlight of the celebration was the distribution of over 20 wheelchairs, clutches, footwear, wrappers, and food items to people with disabilities and political supporters from Benue North West. This gesture reaffirmed his passion for service and relentless drive to improve lives across the district.
Another key moment was the presentation of prizes to winners of his Sports, Essay, and Quiz competitions. Dr. Hwande further awarded scholarships worth One Hundred Thousand Naira each to 40 indigent students from Moses Orshio University and Joseph Sarwuan Tarka University, reinforcing his commitment to education and youth empowerment.
