The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Benue State has settled for former Attorney General of the Federation, Chief Mike Kaase Aondoakaa, as its consensus gubernatorial candidate for the 6 February 2027 election. This decision is rooted in longstanding political arguments around zoning, equity and historical precedent within the Tiv socio-political structure.
Since 1979, Tiv politics has broadly rotated leadership among five blocs viz Kwande, Jechira, Jemgbagh, Sankera and MINDA. Each of these blocs has, at different times, produced the governor of Benue State. From 1999 onward, a clearer pattern emerged; Jemgbagh (1999–2007), Sankera (2007–2015) and MINDA (2015–2023) each completed two full terms. Earlier cycles were less stable ;Kwande governed from 1979 to 1983 before military interruption, while Jechira’s tenure from 1991 to 1993 was also truncated.
As the tenure of Chief Samuel Ortom ended in 2023, three major arguments surfaced. Kwande contended that rotation should return to its starting point, especially as its earlier tenure was cut short. Jechira argued on similar grounds, noting that it had the briefest stint in power. A third position, perhaps the most structurally compelling, focused on the broader state balance. Since 1979, only Tiv indigenes had governed Benue, leaving the Idoma and Igede of Zone C unrepresented at that level.
Despite these competing claims, the governorship in 2023 returned to Jechira, producing Rev. Fr. Dr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia. As his first term approaches its conclusion, the zoning debate has resurfaced with renewed intensity.
The PDP’s decision to field a Kwande bloc candidate in 2027 reopens these arguments but also attempts to resolve part of the historical imbalance within Tiv blocs, particularly addressing grievances from areas whose tenures were truncated. It is within this political context that Chief Mike Kaase Aondoakaa emerges as the party’s standard-bearer.
Born on 12 June 1962 in Ushongo, Benue State, Aondoakaa received his secondary education at Mount Saint Gabriel’s Secondary School, Makurdi, before proceeding to the University of Maiduguri, where he earned his LL.B. He built a long legal career, becoming a senior partner in a law firm for nearly two decades.
His entry into national prominence came in 2007 when he was appointed Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice under President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua. He served until February 2010. During his tenure, he played a role in the review of the Justice Mohammed Uwais Electoral Reform Committee report, contributing to the production of a government white paper that generated significant debate, particularly on the issue of presidential appointment powers over the electoral commission.
After leaving public office, Aondoakaa transitioned into agribusiness, establishing MIKAP, a company involved in rice production, processing and export. In 2025, he was honoured with the traditional title I vaan Ayange i Tiv by the Tiv Traditional Council.
With his emergence as PDP’s gubernatorial candidate, the stage is set for a contest that will not only test political strength but also revisit unresolved questions of zoning, equity and representation in Benue State politics.
